The Internship Program at City High Middle School enables students to use the community of Grand Rapids as a classroom and laboratory for career awareness.  It offers high school students the opportunity to explore business or professional positions, which they may choose to pursue through further education.  On-site career information and pre-career information are gained by working on a one-to-one basis with a professional who volunteers to serve as the Community Teacher.

Internship Guidelines

Students may not have an internship experience at their place of employment.  Students may not do community service at their internship site.  If the internship site would like to hire the student, they may do so only after the internship is completed.

It is expected that a professional relationship be maintained between the student and the Community Teacher at all times.  If a student encounters any difficulties or problems with the internship, she or he should contact the principal or counselor immediately to discuss the problem and work out a solution.

Internships will not be recorded on student transcripts nor will a grade be awarded for the experience.  A short reflection (one page) is due at the end of the internship.

This internship experience provides opportunities for student-centered learning, as students are able to select an internship that sustains their interests and meets their needs.  Students are able to negotiate the time they spend on their internship with their employer.
